The client's goals for his kitchen was that it would both be able to be a highly functional one person kitchen and also be able to be the heart and center of large social gatherings.  The existing kitchen and the existing bath were small and functioned poorly.  Planning department constraints would not allow any addition. Making the kitchen and bath feel more expansive had to be done with this constraint as well as not removing or reducing the existing living room, dining room and bedrooms with their closets.  An additional goal of ours was to make the house suitable for our very tall client.
